I'm German, Irish, Native American (Cherokee, Seminole, and Muskogee Creek), Spanish(Spain), Syrian, Turkish, Melanesian, and African (only Congo region known of so far but may be more).....I have no idea why I look more white considering I'm technically more POC races than white races LMAO.....but I do wish people would stop with all the races and division and such because so many of us are mixed or very very mixed....because of the divisions there's really no group for me or others like me to fit in at all.....I just wish we were all a group of humans accepting each other for all of our uniqueness....I hope this all makes sense? I just don't want it to be like, "oh, you're not black enough..I don't care if your great grandma was black" or "not native enough" "or not west asian enough" etc etc anymore....ugh....I face my own prejudices mostly to being deaf but I DO get people asking me A LOT what I am because I tend to "look exotic" ??whatever that means...I have had people ask my mom if I was adopted because I was much darker than her due to a summer tan bringing out my reddish brown color more...I stay in my house most often than not....I have horrid neighbors who harass me every time I go outside.....I do know various traditions and stories that has been passed down through the generations associated with our POC ancestors but it just sucks not being able to really be a part of any POC group because of not "being enough" of this or that....It does feel like being on the outside watching everyone and wanting to be a part of something, but being told no. I'm all for helping POC being accepted as equals and I know white privilege is very real, no doubts....but is asking to fit in and be accepted too much to ask for those of us on the fringes? ESPECIALLY when we truly want to learn more about the various traditions, cultures, and stories of our POC heritage that has been lost through the years.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64601544396119547.post-77861868357710565522017-04-26T15:36:08.532-07:002017-04-26T15:36:08.532-07:00مؤسسة القاضي

Although I, for the most part and to the majority of those I meet, appear white, my last name (Narahara) is a dead giveaway to my heritage. I am proud of my heritage, and don't want to deny it solely on the basis of how I appear. Looking white means I don't in person, have to undergo the same discrimination of my fellow Asians. However, on paper, this privileged is erased due to my last name. Moreover, in appearing white, many people who are unaware of, or simply forget my heritage, speak openly around me making fun of "those Asians man, you know?........" Or despite it being 2015, I still hear things about Pearl Harbor and the 'Japs.' After much thought, I decided to identify as "mixed" but not POC. This way, I am able to claim my heritage, but I don't claim to share the same experiences as POCs. Although thids creates a gray are ( I a sometimes unsure about where I fit, as I don't want to attend school events specifically for POCs (I don't want to invade their safe spaces) but I don't want to isolate myself from the community.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64601544396119547.post-61589834542139561462015-02-25T17:08:56.016-08:002015-02-25T17:08:56.016-08:00Another anon here, commenting like a year too late...Another anon here, commenting like a year too late.

Honestly I think white-passing people should not be pressured into giving up the PoC identifier if they want to use it. While it is a very political identity, it can also be very personal, especially if the white-passing person is in a family with non-passing relatives they are close with and through whom they see the impact of different forms of racism, for example. I think as long as white-passing people add on the "white-passing" part or an equivalent to the term "PoC" or actively acknowledge the differences in their experiences and privilege from that of the non-passing experiences of PoC or don't talk over non-passing PoC, that's sufficient.

As someone wiser than me once said, white-passing privilege means that (all other things considered equal) in a situation in which a white-passing PoC experiences racism, the non-passing PoC will experience more racism.

There is a difference, but that does not mean white-passing people are not 'oC "enough" to be PoC like the rest of us.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64601544396119547.post-54436427471946097852015-02-09T20:20:27.145-08:002015-02-09T20:20:27.145-08:00I know this post is already a year old but I figur...I know this post is already a year old but I figured it might not hurt to add another viewpoint to the discussion. As a non-black, white-passing person I still struggle with my identity DAILY. Generally I've come to the conclusion that I just don't think I will ever identify as strictly "white", because that erases too many crucial parts of my identity. To me it's just not who I am and it's not who I will ever be. However, I feel like it wouldn't be right for me to claim the term POC either, because it implies experiences that I've just never had. I don't suffer from racial oppression on a day to day basis. At least not in the same way or to the same severity as those who are not white-passing, if that makes sense. And personally I think that's what McKenzie was also trying to get at with her post. I mean McKenzie herself even stated "I’m not saying you’re white or that you should call yourself that. I’m only questioning use of the term POC." She definitely wasn't saying that being a white-passing person invalidates your identity as a non-white person. I think she just meant that the term POC carries a lot of weight and implications of daily racial oppression that certain other terms such as "non-white" do not, and therefore if you are white-passing/light skinned/mixed (and again I stress McKenzie's point that none of these necessarily equate to "white") you might want to rethink your use of the term. Anyways just my thoughts on that matter through my own personal experiences.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64601544396119547.post-75533820993512178632014-10-09T14:23:35.805-07:002014-10-09T14:23:35.805-07:00It would be nice if there were no boxes and people...It would be nice if there were no boxes and people were identified by there character but that is my own fantasy world. If he wants to identify himself as black because it is the most comfortable description for him so be it, as long as he understands, in most societies especially the U.S. it is not always in your best interest to claim you are black. As for someone stating he will never be mistaken for black, just know he may not be mistaken for black but there are black people who just happen to look asian, I say do what makes you feel comfortable, but know you may pay a heavy price for your comfort.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06872882848813975242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64601544396119547.post-60558685654641916662014-08-26T13:12:41.979-07:002014-08-26T13:12:41.979-07:00No, she is kicking them out because they are not b...No, she is kicking them out because they are not black. You cannot choose your race if both parents are white you are white. If you have two different race parents you are biracial and not black. Black is not a decision, but a race and identity. White people don't let biracial people claim white. You know there are some black people who are authentic blacks and want to stay that way don't want watered down non-black people representing us. One drop - even ZERO drop was fine with us. The best example of this was R&B legend Johnny Otis. He chose to live in Watts, he married a black woman, made black music and preached in a black church. He wanted to be black and we were happy to have him. It feeds into the conversation of identities as an abstract yet very tangible social construct, as well as to the issues of performativity (j.butler) and relationships of audience/character/subject and relationships between the social, political and historical.

Lingers the question of what identities would be like in a system where oppression and hierarchization do not exist or have been left behind. The possibility of claiming a common human identity and after an identity that is not as politicized but instead appreciated as part of the human experience and diversity. Unfortunately, this sounds utopic and problematic, as the historical processes of oppresion and exclusion are not to be disk acknowledged so as not to dis-empower these ( currently and historically ) marginalized-oppressed identities.

Definitely lots of questions but perhaps some hope as what stands out is that there are no fixed boundaries but blurry and elastic ones...Leonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64601544396119547.post-53576236963641989742014-02-17T21:16:32.899-08:002014-02-17T21:16:32.899-08:00*thumbs down* too much nonsense in the article.. i...*thumbs down* too much nonsense in the article.. if zun is half black.. that is his business how he identifies.. the article talks about letting people identify as they see fit..and then the author tries to force her pov about someones racial identity.. just odd... bump the "people of color" nonsense... bump the lumping non black people into the black struggle.. and bump this article.. lol. as far as light skinned privilege.. i would love to read the authors explanation of that in 2014... This is a great piece.

Yaba Blay's project is a wonderful project and Zun Lee's narrative in the "(1)ne Drop" (pages 90-93) are the most poignant in the book. I hope you will pick up a copy.Steve Rileyhttp://www.mixedracestudies.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64601544396119547.post-39403942370944841372014-02-16T00:02:31.619-08:002014-02-16T00:02:31.619-08:00I don't know or pretend to know what Yaba Blay...I don't know or pretend to know what Yaba Blay's personal reasons for taking on this project are. I think when looking at a text or an artistic project, the intentions of the creator become irrelevant at a certain point as readers and viewers undertake the very important process of making meaning and interpreting what's before them. I only know what appears in the book. To me, I interpret it as being about freedom of self-identifying (or choice) and about challenging faulty notions of what "black" looks like or means. Furthermore, by having images of a diverse group of individuals I think the work also invites us question what "white" and "Asian" and "Latin@," etc. mean as well. The book doesn't seem to be promoting the one-drop rule as gospel truth that must be abided by, but taking it on as an prime example of the constructedness of race and the reality of its fluidity. Perhaps, some other writer and photographer may get together some day and make a book called "White" where people who may not "look" white self-identify as such and we can add that to the conversation as something equally valid and worthy of dialogue and critique. mixed dreamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17976612661328226453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64601544396119547.post-20029508403439883412014-02-15T22:43:15.434-08:002014-02-15T22:43:15.434-08:00Yaba Blay is promoting the "one drop" my...Yaba Blay is promoting the "one drop" myth because she is (1) jealous and wishes to God she were whiter and (2) trying to force whites and other non-blacks into her "race" kicking and screaming. She is not for freedom of choice. She promotes the "freedom" to pretend to be "black" only and nothing else.AD Powellhttp://open.salon.com/blog/mischlingnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64601544396119547.post-39369702958067369252014-02-10T09:02:59.176-08:002014-02-10T09:02:59.176-08:00Beautiful article mixed dreamer.
